HTC Hero users in Ireland are to have their handsets upgraded to Android 2.1, with a custom build of the operating system due to be send to their phones in the coming days and weeks.

HTC have announced Hero users across the globe will soon receive notifications offering them the upgrade, with a specific version of it being pushed through for Irish customers. The update will be via Firmware over-the-air, which means users will not be required to connect their device to a PC to make the change.

Due to the size of the file HTC recommend users download it via a WiFi hotspot, however, just in case it pushes users into the red on their data plan.

Android 2.1 – codenamed Eclair – is not the latest stable version of Android (that honour goes to version 2., aka Froyo) however it does offer a number of new features including:

  • A revamped user interface
  • An improved virtual keyboard
  • Microsoft Exchange support
  • Digital Zoom
  • A Google Maps update
  • HTML5 Support
  • New contact lists
