Microsoft unveils Kin handsets

Microsoft's Kin One and Kin Two

Microsoft has unveiled two much-anticipated phones under the new ‘Kin’ brand. Both the Kin One and Kin Two are touch-screen devices with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and run on an operating system unique from the company’s existing Windows Mobile platform.

The phones – which will launch in May in the US – come on the back of Microsoft’s acquisition of Danger, which made the Sidekick range of handsets. As with these phones the new Kin range is being manufactured by Sharp for the company.

The main focus of the Kin handsets is in the integration of social media content, such as feeds from Twitter and Facebook. The device also backs up the user’s information automatically, meaning photos taken and contents saved will all be accessible online.

Specs released so far say the Kin One will have 4GB of memory and a 5mp camera. The Kin Two will have 8GB and a 8mp camera. No concrete details of an Irish – or even European launch – are known just yet but the phones are expected to arrive on this side of the Atlantic in the Autumn.

More details are available at the Kin website.

That Kin One is really quite odd looking. Not exactly the most pocketable of phones. The Kin Two seems to more logical, but again the design is not great and the buttons look plasticy and hard to use.

It’s good to see a company targeting the kids market but Microsoft should be doing more to compete in the high-end sector.
