Chrome OS is just another rebranded Linux GUI, it would be much better if Google came up with an OS that would directly compete with Windows.

I have installed Chrome OS on one of my netbooks and the performance of Chrome OS is just okay. there is nothing fancy or very special about it. It was just a sort of GUI version of linux or something.

@Niall - remote access of media would be easy but only if the home PC was left on and connected at all times, which wouldn't be practical for many.

The only other option is to allow people to store their media online - a possibility but again far from ideal. I know for me that would mean many gigs of storage space and then Google could open themselves up to copyright issues too.

Then there's the ultimate issue with Chrome - what if I'm nowhere near a net connection?

@Eoin - And that's all they were made to do really - on the opposite side of that the Samsung NC10 I bought became my main computer while my 14" Dell was out of action and while it wasn't a perfect laptop replacement it did a fine job.

Google have already said they see Android and ChromeOS merging in the future so I don't see why they don't just go for a single platform from the start.

The line between computers and mobiles is increasingly blurred and having a common platform across the two would probably remove it completely (and make interaction between the two devices easier than ever).

Some devs have even put Android on netbooks already.

Nice post Adam. I take the point about price points on netbooks. I bought an Asus Eee just as they were getting cold and the novelty was over. It sits now under my TV, used only when someone else is using the iMac.

While the goog (R) have already lowered expectations by saying this is the OS for second computers, it is hard to know why they want a cloud OS right now. Android anyone? I know it might be like comparing apples and oranges but why build two platforms and think that device convergence won't lead to cannibalism?

I can see your point Adam. It's a wonderful technical achievement and a worthy concept, but netbooks are probably the wrong market. As a competition to the rumoured Apple Tablet the OS could have some merit. It would still need to allow access to locally stored media, unless Google devise some way for streaming this from the cloud or home.
